The Deep

The deep places of the heart hold many troublesome aspects which we may think of as our inner demons. We often try to contain them, but nonetheless they seep out. In this image, they are depicted as literal devilish creatures crawling up from the depths of a split open abdomen. The figure tries to contend with them, much as the ego tries to contend with the id. It is a losing battle to try to contain these little creatures/urges without crushing them, and she cannot do that without pain because they are a part of herself. The conflict has reduced her to tears. Maybe the whole world holds a similar uncontainable sinfulness in its depths, because she is surrounded by the same dark canyons she finds within.
